Matariki: Land, Sky and Sea

20 June 2010 - 2 pm to 4 pm

The Michael King Writers’ Centre will hold a literary event to celebrate Maori writing and story-telling on the occasion of Matariki on Sunday 20 June from 2 pm. The event will feature film-maker and author, Bradford Haami, who holds the first ever Maori writer’s residency at the centre in 2010. Bradford Haami has written extensively about Maori history and culture, as well as being a documentary and drama writer, a director and producer, and a researcher at Te Papa in Wellington. His latest project explores the special place whales have in Maori culture from pre- and post-colonial eras, right up to the present day. The event will also feature other Maori writers, including poet Jacqueline Celia Carter and poet/performance artist Tru Paraha. This free event will held at the Kerr Street Artspace, at the base of Mt Victoria on Kerr Street, Devonport, and will be followed by afternoon tea up the hell at the Michael King Writers' Centre.
