Poetry and Picnic in the Garden - Auckland Anniversary Day

27 January 2014 - 11 am to 4 pm

Enjoy the spectacle of sails from the Signalman’s House on Auckland Anniversary Day. The house and garden will be open for members of the public to picnic, watch the Auckland Regatta from a great vantage point, enjoy the views and listen to local poets reading their work. Look through the collection of literary memorabilia in the historic Signalman’s House, the home of New Zealand’s first writers’ centre. The open day is hosted by the Devonport Friends of the Michael King Writers’ Centre. BYO picnic. Free tea/coffee. 

Writers who will be reading include:

  • Current writer in residence Alice Miller
  • Former writer in residence Te Awhina Arahanga
  • Titirangi poet Ron Riddell
  • Performance poet Gus Suminovic
  • inside.out organiser and spoken word performer Anita Arlov
  • Young writer Brian Gasheema

The centre is half way up the road to the summit of Takarunga Mt Victoria in Devonport.

Park on top of Takarunga Mt Victoria or on nearby Kerr Street. There is limited parking on the summit road. Or catch the ferry from the city.
