Events 2014

Two exciting events

10 April 2014 - 6 pm and 7.30 pm

Two exciting events are coming up on Thursday on the North Shore this week (April 10). If you are keen, there will be time to scoot along to both.

Several well-known poets have arranged a celebration at the Takapuna Library for Michele Leggott, who received the 2013 Prime Minister’s Award for Literary Achievement in Poetry and who has a new volume of poetry out next week. Michele was also the inaugural NZ Poet Laureate. She is a professor in the Department of English at The University of Auckland and the founding director of the NZ electronic poetry centre. She was made a Member of the NZ Order of Merit in 2009 for her services to poetry.

When: Thursday April 10, 6 pm (refreshments) for a 6.30 pm start

Where: Takapuna Library (Level 1), The Strand, Takapuna

Meantime, the Devonport Library Associates will host a talk by Peter Wells on the theme of “Almost always, never quite”. He will discuss the slim trail of Pakeha history, looking at why Pakeha prefer the stories of just about any other culture than their own. Peter is the current writer in residence at the Michael King Writers’ Centre, working on a new book about the enigma of family. Peter is equally distinguished as an author and in film, with numerous national and international awards to his name. He was co-founder of the Auckland Writers and Readers Festival, was North & South magazine New Zealander of the Year in 1999, and was made a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to literature and film in 2006. He was awarded the Michael King Fellowship by Creative New Zealand in 2011 to work on Journey to a Hanging - Carl Sylvius Volkner & Kereopa Te Rau, which is due to be published by Penguin Random in May 2014.

When: Thursday April 10, 7.30 pm (refreshments) for an 8 pm start

Where: The Depot, 28 Clarence St, Devonport

Both events have a small charge to cover refreshments.
