A Tangled Web

28 September 2014 - 4 pm

The bloody murders of a family of three... A false accusation against a respected Devonport citizen... The public hanging of the actual murderer on the Devonport waterfront, right where the murders took place. This is a true story. The murders took place in Devonport in 1847.

Devonport writer Kirk Page was fascinated by the story and wrote a novel based on it, Tangled Web. The book was published in 1982 and explores life in the young city of Auckland at the time, and the relationship between the murderer, Joseph Burns, and his common law wife, Margaret Reardon, who tried to protect him.

John Duder is the descendant of the respected Devonport resident, Thomas Duder, who was falsely accused of the murder. Join Kirk Page, author Tessa Duder and John Duder to discuss the story of this awful murder and all that ensued, in a historic hall just metres away from the scene of the crime and the hanging.

This event is presented by the Devonport Friends of the Michael King Writers' Centre, as part of the Auckland Heritage Festival.
