Young Writers Workshop, Devonport 2012

(Mar/Apr 2012)

Sixteen students from North Shore secondary schools were nominated by their schools to take part in a series of workshops on Sunday afternoons from March 11 to April 1, 2012.

There were ten girls and six boys, all from Years 11 to 13. Schools that nominated students include Rangitoto College, Kristin School, Glenfield College, Takapuna Grammar School, Pinehurst School, Northcote College and Albany Senior High School.

The workshops are designed for senior students who show promise in creative writing, and who would enjoy the chance to explore the creative process, experiment with a range of subjects, stimuli and writing styles, and learn more about publishing opportunities.

Experienced teachers Rosalind Ali and Johanna Emeney, a published poet, were the main tutors, and worked with the students on a range of writing exercises and discussions. They invited well-known guest writers / publishers to the workshops, to share experiences, insight and advice. These included poet Robert Sullivan, fiction writer Sue Orr, novelist and graphic artist Sarah Laing, novelist Chris Else and publisher and editor Anna Hodge.

Students were encouraged to collaborate and publish their writing through the year for our inaugural publication Signals, launched at a final workshop/event in December, featuring Michael King Writers' Centre resident writer Eleanor Catton, who is working on a trilogy for young adults.

These March/April workshops were offered with the support of the Auckland Council's Creative Communities Scheme.
