The West Auckland Poetry Project 2011: A Thousand Poems for Our Place
West Auckland poet Paula Green led a new Poetry Project on the theme of Our Place in June and July 2011.
Students from four West Auckland Schools worked with Paula to explore the places they live or love, or places that mean things to them. As much as it is a celebration of the bush, the ocean and the birdlife that are features of West Auckland, the poems also celebrate everyday life, families, the suburbs.
Children wrote their poems on a poster designed by local artist Michael Hight.
Their work can be viewed on the nzepc web site, which has a section on The Poetry Project.
The schools which took part in the project are:
- Lincoln Heights Primary School
- Massey High School
- Glen Eden Primary School
- Glen Eden Intermediate School
The poetry posters were displayed in Massey and Glen Eden Libraries, where poetry readings were held and children from the schools visited local rest homes to share their work.
This project is supported by the Michael King Writers’ Centre and the Auckland Council.
