ANNUAL WRITERS WEEKEND

The Business of Writing—Making a Living Through Words

Saturday 4th and Sunday 5th November 2017

National Library, Parnell, Auckland

The Michael King Writers’ Centre has traditionally held an annual residential workshop designed for emerging and experienced writers wishing to develop their skills in specific areas. In 2017 this has evolved to meet the changing needs of writers by removing the residential element, and changing venues to the beautiful National Library in Parnell, Auckland.

The high-level workshop features prominent authors and tutors in an intimate environment of 50 or less attendees. Sessions drill down into specific aspects of writing around a theme, which, this year, is The Business of Writing—Making a Living Through Words. The stellar line-up includes sessions with some of New Zealand’s most celebrated and awarded writers, including an opening key note by Ashleigh Young (winner of Yale University’s Wyndham-Campbell Prize and the Royal Society Te Apārangi Award for General Non-Fiction at the 2017 Ockham NZ Book Awards), and a lively conversation between crime fiction all-stars Paul Cleave and Ben Sanders.

Practical sessions include how to structure your writing life with creative coach Kathryn Burnett, social media strategy with Jef Kay from Easy Social Media, navigating traditional and non-traditional publishing models, subsidiary rights, and using competitions and grants to boost your career.

Delegates will have the opportunity to dine with eight of New Zealand’s top publishers at the much anticipated Publishers Lunch, as well as attend award-winning author Paula Morris’ new book launch on Saturday night, alongside invited guests from the New Zealand’s literary scene.

Tickets will be sold on a first come, first served basis, with a maximum of 50 tickets available. The ticket price of $329 (incl. GST), includes the two-day workshop, meals, the Paula Morris book launch, and the Publishers Lunch
