Sam is the Assistant Curator of the New Zealand Cartoons and Comics Archive at the National Library of New Zealand, and a working comic artist. He has developed comic resources and contributed to publications and journals across the globe. Sam is particularly interested in inclusive and intersectional ways of working that acknowledge the importance of accessibility, decolonisation and feminism. His work includes ‘Rooster Tails’ an ongoing autobio webcomic about being queer and trans in Aotearoa.
During his residency Sam is working on a book titled Queer Comics – a critical guide (for Bloomsbury’s Comics Studies series) which is co-authored by Dr. Tof Eklund (AUT). Queer Comics will provide an up-to-date international and intersectional overview of queer comics: the history, development, impact, subject area, and methodology of queer comics, with key texts.
