Over one hundred and seventy New Zealand writers have held supported residencies since the centre opened 2005 and since 2013 it has also hosted international residencies in association with the NZ China Friendship Society and Varuna House in NSW, Australia.
The Michael King Writers Centre has an impressive list of alumni. Whiti Hereaka completed her NZ Book Award wining novel Kurangaituku whilst on a three month residency in 2017 and Man Booker Prize winner Eleanor Catton wrote the final draft of her novel The Luminaries while she held a six-month residency at the centre in 2012. Rachel Barrowman worked on her exhaustive biography of Maurice Gee while she held a residency in 2010. Poet Laureates Vincent O’Sullivan, David Eggleton and Ian Wedde are also among our alumni, along with leading writers such as Gina Cole, Roger Horrocks, Ashleigh Young, Josh Pomare, Jane Arthur and Pip Adam.
